Measure grass using your smartphone

A faster way to measure grass

Most pasture-based dairy farmers know grass measurement matters. The challenge is making it happen often enough, accurately enough, and without it taking over the day.

Plate meters work, but they take time. Spreadsheets need updating. Visual estimates are quick, but they can vary between people and paddocks.

AIMER makes it quick and simple.

Using your smartphone, AIMER estimates pasture cover as you walk the field. The data then flows into a clear feed wedge and grazing dashboard, helping you make more confident decisions from the information you have just collected.

Practical pasture information, when you need it

Measure covers in seconds

Use your smartphone to capture pasture cover readings quickly and consistently, without needing a plate meter for every walk.

See the feed wedge clearly

Turn cover readings into a practical feed wedge so you can see where grass supply sits and what needs attention.

Make better grazing decisions

Use current pasture data to support decisions on what to graze next, when to supplement, and how to respond when growth changes.

Save time on farm walks

Make grass measurement easier to fit into the week, especially when time and labour are tight.

Keep the team aligned

Give farmers, staff and advisors a shared view of pasture cover, instead of relying on memory, notes or old spreadsheets.

Built for grazing-focused dairy farms

AIMER is best suited at launch to pasture-based dairy farms that already value grass measurement, or want to measure more consistently.

It is particularly relevant if you:

  • already use a plate meter but want to save time

  • used to measure grass regularly but have struggled to keep it going

  • want clearer information for grazing and supplement decisions

  • have staff involved in grazing decisions

  • want pasture data that is easier to capture, share and act on

The current UK launch focus is dairy farms using ryegrass, ryegrass/clover and similar productive grazing swards.

How it works:

1. Walk the paddock

Use your smartphone to scan pasture as you move through the field.

2. Capture pasture covers

AIMER estimates pasture cover and records the data against the paddock.

3. View the feed wedge

See your pasture supply clearly and spot gaps, surpluses or paddocks needing attention.

4. Plan the next move

Use the information to support grazing order, supplement decisions and team discussion.

Practical support from people who understand grazing

Precision Grazing works with livestock farmers across the UK to improve grazing systems, business performance and resilience.

Grass grown and grass utilised are still two of the biggest drivers of performance in pasture-based livestock systems.

That is why we are working with AIMER to bring this technology to UK farms.

Our role is to make sure AIMER is introduced in a practical, farmer-first way - with support that helps farmers understand how the tool fits into their grazing routine.

This is not technology for the sake of it. It is a tool to help farmers make better use of grass.

Ready to measure grass faster?

NZ-proven. UK-ready.

AIMER is already being used by more than 500 farms in New Zealand, where pasture measurement and grazing decision-making are central to dairy performance.

UK development has been an 18 month process involving 30 farms across England, Wales and Scotland collecting 1000s of data points.

AIMER accuracy in the UK is currently 90% of covers within 250 kg DM/ha of a plate meter.

Unlike the plate meter - it gives a consistent result between users meaning any team member can measure and return the same pasture cover reading.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a plate meter to use AIMER?

No. AIMER uses your smartphone to estimate pasture cover as you walk the paddock.

Is AIMER suitable for all farm types?

At launch, AIMER is most relevant to pasture-based dairy farms already measuring grass, or wanting to measure more consistently.

What swards is it best suited to?

The current UK focus is productive dairy grazing swards such as ryegrass and ryegrass/clover leys.

Can staff use it too?

Yes. One of the benefits of AIMER is making pasture information easier to collect and share across the team.
